cody suttonParticipantI have been driving an Audi for a while now, but I recently started paying more attention to how much the transmission changes the way the car feels during normal driving. I used to think most of the driving experience came from the engine, but after spending more time in different situations, I am starting to think the transmission has a much bigger role than I realized. For example, my Audi feels very relaxed when I am cruising on a clear road, but when I enter busy city traffic, the whole driving experience becomes different because the car is constantly changing gears, slowing down, and accelerating again. Sometimes it feels very smooth and almost unnoticeable, while other times I can feel the car deciding when to change gear. That got me curious about what is actually happening in the background. I recently came across Quick answers on what an Audi transmission does while trying to understand the subject better, but I still have a few practical questions that I thought other owners might be able to answer from experience. Does the transmission mainly respond to vehicle speed and engine speed, or does it also pay attention to how aggressively the driver is pressing the accelerator? I have noticed that when I press the accelerator more firmly, the car sometimes holds a gear longer before shifting, which makes sense for acceleration, but I am curious about how much of this is controlled automatically. Does the transmission also adjust its behavior based on driving mode, road conditions, or the way someone has been driving recently? Another thing I have wondered about is fuel economy. If the transmission keeps the engine at a lower speed while cruising, is that one of the main reasons modern automatic cars can be more efficient on highways? And when driving through traffic, does frequent shifting naturally put more workload on the transmission compared with steady highway driving? I am also interested in what happens when using manual mode or paddle shifters. Does the driver actually have more control over the transmission in that situation, or does the car still protect itself by changing gears automatically when necessary? I have never wanted to experiment too much because I do not want to treat the transmission roughly just to see how it reacts. Another question is whether the transmission is supposed to feel exactly the same every day. Mine sometimes feels slightly different when the car has just been started compared with after I have been driving for a while, and I am wondering whether temperature can affect normal shifting behavior. I would also like to hear from people who have owned different Audi models because I imagine the experience can vary depending on the transmission and engine combination. Has anyone else noticed how much the transmission changes the character of an Audi during city driving, highway cruising, parking, and faster acceleration? I am mainly trying to understand the everyday behavior better so I can tell the difference between normal operation and something that deserves attention.

Daniel HillParticipantThe transmission responding to accelerator pressure rather than just speed is accurate and it’s actually one of the more sophisticated aspects of modern Audi units. Pressing more firmly signals driver intent that the system interprets as a request for performance rather than economy which is why it holds gears longer under those conditions.

cody suttonParticipantFeeling slightly different when cold versus warmed up is completely normal and expected behavior rather than something to worry about. Transmission fluid viscosity changes with temperature and the system’s hydraulic responses are calibrated for operating temperature so the first few minutes of driving will always feel marginally different from after twenty minutes of normal use. If the cold behavior is dramatically different or takes unusually long to settle that’s worth noting but mild variation is built into how these systems work.

Lucas HughesParticipantDriving mode genuinely does change transmission behavior in meaningful ways rather than just being a marketing feature. Sport or Dynamic mode typically holds gears longer, downshifts more aggressively when slowing, and responds to accelerator input more immediately than Comfort or Efficiency modes which prioritize early upshifts and smooth transitions. The system also learns short term patterns from how you’ve been driving in the previous few minutes which is why a car that’s been driven gently might feel slightly hesitant initially after you push harder before the adaptation catches up.

Christopher KingParticipantManual mode and paddle shifters giving genuine control is true within limits because the system will still override to protect the engine from over-rev or the transmission from lugging below its minimum recommended speed in that gear.

Joshua AdamsParticipantCity driving being harder on the transmission than highway cruising is accurate and it’s the reason fluid condition matters more for urban vehicles than for cars doing mostly long distance driving. Frequent gear changes, more heat cycles, and less sustained cooling time between shifts all contribute to fluid degradation happening faster in stop and go conditions which is why urban Audi drivers often find transmission fluid service more important than the standard interval suggests.
