What should I check before hiring an ebook publisher?

[Olivia Hill]

Selecting an eBook publishing service or an eBook publishing house is one of the most crucial decisions one can make, particularly if this is the first book that you are publishing. When negotiating an agreement, don’t be too hasty; understand exactly what kind of services the company provides and whether it’s compatible with yours. The first thing you should establish when looking for a company is experience. Examine its track record for providing publishing services and whether it has published books like yours. Some ebook ghostwriting services have a depth of experience in your genre or type of book and will be better able to understand your audience and publishing needs. Then take a look at the services that are provided. Some companies will publish only; some will edit, proofread, format, cover design, publish, and/or market; and some will provide author support. Be sure you understand what you’re paying for. Another crucial aspect is pricing. Request a detailed estimate and see if there are extra fees for extras not in the base price. If the pricing is not transparent, or if it seems like it’s an urgent purchase, proceed with caution. Also, check out past projects and authentic customer feedback. You can get an idea of what you can expect by checking out some books that have been published. But don’t accept word for word what the company says on their website. Where possible, look for independent reviews as well. Carefully read the contract before agreeing to anything. Be mindful of ownership, copyright, royalties, distribution rights, cancellation terms, and responsibilities of both parties. It is important to know who will have your manuscript and where your book will be distributed. Communication also matters. A reputable publishing service will clarify and address your questions without leaving you confused or pressured.
