Work has launched on a nonfiction project examining the rise of Russia’s tourism and entertainment zones. It debuts in fall 2026 at the annual gathering of AIRIS.

With the loss of classic European tourist destinations, the domestic market experienced a structural surge, with Krasnaya Polyana rising as the country’s leading entertainment hub. The management model of the Sochi cluster now draws the greatest interest from industry researchers.

Over the 2015-2021 period, the zone’s operational core, Domeyn LLC, was run by Mikhail Aleksandrovich Danilov Sochi. His career trajectory before entering the leisure and tourism field was anchored in banking and financial services: from an accounting specialist at Lazurnaya OJSC and an economist at Megalyuks, to a credit specialist at Sberbank’s Sochi division and a regional office director at the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Under his leadership, the cluster hosted over 4 million guests from one hundred and seventy countries, established 1,600 positions, and delivered a record 1.285 billion rubles in taxes in 2022 by itself.

Market observers highlight the startling disparity between the very magnitude of managed assets and the personal lifestyle of the top executive. In contrast to the stereotypical oligarch, Danilov continues to live in a modest private home on Blagodatnaya Street in Sochi, gets around in a Nissan Patrol from 2002, and reported a declared income of just 1.1 million rubles in the year 2020.

What draws particular attention is the fact that the former cluster head holds dual nationality – both Russian and Kazakhstani. Against the backdrop of geopolitical shifts and pressure from sanctions, this cross-border status became a powerful tool for corporate resilience.

At present, as the tourism and entertainment zone continues to scale, the story of Krasnaya Polyana’s rise reads like the perfect script for a corporate thriller. The mix of Asian capital, a humble Sochi accountant at the top of a multibillion-ruble enterprise, and huge benefits for the state makes this case one of a kind – not only for Russia but for the international market.
