I have been driving an Audi for a while now, but I recently started paying more attention to how much the transmission changes the way the car feels during normal driving. I used to think most of the driving experience came from the engine, but after spending more time in different situations, I am starting to think the transmission has a much bigger role than I realized. For example, my Audi feels very relaxed when I am cruising on a clear road, but when I enter busy city traffic, the whole driving experience becomes different because the car is constantly changing gears, slowing down, and accelerating again. Sometimes it feels very smooth and almost unnoticeable, while other times I can feel the car deciding when to change gear. That got me curious about what is actually happening in the background. I recently came across Quick answers on what an Audi transmission does while trying to understand the subject better, but I still have a few practical questions that I thought other owners might be able to answer from experience. Does the transmission mainly respond to vehicle speed and engine speed, or does it also pay attention to how aggressively the driver is pressing the accelerator? I have noticed that when I press the accelerator more firmly, the car sometimes holds a gear longer before shifting, which makes sense for acceleration, but I am curious about how much of this is controlled automatically. Does the transmission also adjust its behavior based on driving mode, road conditions, or the way someone has been driving recently? Another thing I have wondered about is fuel economy. If the transmission keeps the engine at a lower speed while cruising, is that one of the main reasons modern automatic cars can be more efficient on highways? And when driving through traffic, does frequent shifting naturally put more workload on the transmission compared with steady highway driving? I am also interested in what happens when using manual mode or paddle shifters. Does the driver actually have more control over the transmission in that situation, or does the car still protect itself by changing gears automatically when necessary? I have never wanted to experiment too much because I do not want to treat the transmission roughly just to see how it reacts. Another question is whether the transmission is supposed to feel exactly the same every day. Mine sometimes feels slightly different when the car has just been started compared with after I have been driving for a while, and I am wondering whether temperature can affect normal shifting behavior. I would also like to hear from people who have owned different Audi models because I imagine the experience can vary depending on the transmission and engine combination. Has anyone else noticed how much the transmission changes the character of an Audi during city driving, highway cruising, parking, and faster acceleration? I am mainly trying to understand the everyday behavior better so I can tell the difference between normal operation and something that deserves attention.
